Blacksmiths have for centuries used smelted wrought iron in the forging of decorative ironwork. In the 1960s-1970s, commercial production of wrought iron ceased, forcing smithies to shift to a much harder 1018 and A36 mild steel. Many desired working properties were lost in this switch, and wrought iron is now sought out in the salvage market.
A group of advanced US-based smiths has determined that an optimal alloy replacement for wrought iron is ASTM 1006. Alexander Brothers is working with the Historic Blacksmith Conservancy to make this material regularly available for use by blacksmiths in the US.
