Christopher Schwarz recently struck out to explore this early Windsor chair form, unpacking both its history and recreating a build process and plans to make building it accessible again. This is all outlined and available in The Stick Chair Journal, no. 3 or through Chris's blog The American Peasant. We have put together a limited run of 20 material kits for the Lincolshire Chair in American Elm. All Stock is kiln-dried, including the arm bow post bending. All sticks are prepped for straight grain and there is 1 extra of each stick to allow for a mistake (we all make them)
Kit includes:
Glued up Seat blank 2"x16.5"x24"
Steam Bent Arm Bow
Bandsawn Comb
4 legs
2 blades
7 short sticks
9 long sticks
Notes on the seats:
This chair has a very deep saddle (seat carving) of 1.5". Chris calls for a 2" thick blank, which was difficult for us to obtain in elm. The seats are glued up of multiple pieces and milled to 2" thick; they may have some glue spots or skip marks, as we wanted to maintain thickness as close as possible, and these marks will be carved away. If at all in doubt, you can leave your saddle shallower than 1.5" with no issue.
This is a limited run, and very unlikely we will do another.
