Post and rung chairs are not only deeply ingrained in American Appalachian culture, but their balance of beauty and function is unmatched. The Berea style post and rung chair design was developed over decades by chair designer Brian Boggs, finding the sweet spot for strength, beauty, and comfort in a traditional aesthetic.
The Berea 6 slat rocker is likely the most comfortable traditional rocker ever designed. Its steam-bent curved structure is not only very strong but is designed to give proper lumbar and spine support. Sitting in it is like getting a hug for your tired body at the end of a long day.
SEATS
We offer two types of seat weaving. Flat reed, harvested from river cane commercially in Southeast Asia, has a clean, white appearance, which makes it a good economical choice for a seat. Hickory bark we harvested by hand here locally in Virginia, and it is the traditional seat weaving material of Appalachia. It is by far the most durable and gives a beautiful fawn brown appearance.
FINISH
Each chair is made by hand by Shea and is finished with a hand-rubbed oil finish.
CRITTERS
Shea often carved critters on his furniture pieces like seen in these photos. These are always by special request and are not included in the pricing here. Feel free to reach out with custom requests.
