Forging hooks with a lag screw end can be cumbersome. Hardware store lags are coated with zinc, which is harmful to your health to burn off. In addition, you have to cut the head off, and they may not have enough of a smooth shaft. 
Our Raw Lag Screw Blanks are a 5/16" diameter smooth raw steel shaft 5-1/4" long with 1-3/4" of lag screw, making for 7" overall length. No burning off zinc and plenty of length for forging ornamental hooks.
